How TDEE is calculated

Resting metabolism (BMR) comes from the Mifflin-St Jeor equation — 10×weight(kg) + 6.25×height(cm) − 5×age + 5 for men, −161 for women — which validation studies have found the most reliable of the common predictive equations for healthy adults. That number is then multiplied by an activity factor from 1.2 (desk life) to 1.9 (physical job plus daily training). If you know your body fat percentage, the calculator switches to Katch-McArdle, which estimates from lean mass instead and is more accurate for very lean or very muscular people.

TDEE is the anchor number: eat consistently above it and you gain, below it and you lose. Most plans start here and adjust by real-world results every two to three weeks.
